# AI on Federated Core

> What AI you can use with your applications today, what's coming, and what happens to your data.

Federated Core is designed so that AI can work with your organization's data without that data being handed to someone else's platform. Your applications and their data live on your own server, and you decide which AI tools can reach them. This page explains what's available, how to connect AI safely, and what's planned.

## What you can use today

- **Automation with AI steps.** [n8n](https://documentation.federated.computer/apps/n8n/) has AI nodes for working with language models. You supply an API key for the AI service you want to use, then add AI steps to workflows, for example to summarize new support tickets or draft replies.
- **AI applications from the software catalog.** These can be added to your Federated Core. Ask Federated Computer support about adding one:
  - **Onyx**, an AI assistant and search platform that answers questions from your organization's documents.
  - **Briefer**, a data workspace with a built-in AI analyst.
  - **Jupyter notebooks**, for exploring data and prototyping with AI.
  - **AI Voice Agent** for the FreePBX phone system.
- **AI coding agents.** Claude Code (for Anthropic models) and OpenCode (for OpenAI models), for development teams whose code is in [Gitea](https://documentation.federated.computer/apps/gitea/).
- **Superbrain.** Federated's workspace for links, notes, and projects. It doesn't include AI features yet. See [Superbrain](https://documentation.federated.computer/superbrain/).

## Connecting AI assistants to your applications

Applications on Federated Core can be connected to AI assistants through the **Model Context Protocol (MCP)**, an open standard that lets an assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT, or a private model look up information and take actions inside an application.

Each connection is scoped: an agent set up for one job can reach only the applications and data you allow. You can switch off any single application's AI access without affecting the others.

### Before you connect an AI tool

- **Know where the data goes.** If the AI model runs at an outside provider, such as OpenAI or Anthropic, everything the assistant reads to answer a request is sent to that provider and handled under their terms. Federated Core keeps your data on your server, but it can't control what an outside service does with data you send it.
- **Give each tool the least access it needs.** Connect only the applications a task needs. Use a dedicated account or API key for each tool so you can see what it did and revoke it on its own.
- **Keep a person in the loop for actions.** Let AI draft replies, summaries, and changes, and have someone review them before anything is sent, published, or deleted.
- **Check your own policies.** If you handle health, legal, financial, or children's data, check your obligations before sending any of it to an outside AI service.

## Your data and AI

These commitments apply whether or not you use AI:

- **Your data is on your server.** Each customer has their own virtual machine. Nothing is pooled or shared with other customers. See [How Federated Core works](../how-federated-core-works/).
- **No training on your data.** Federated Computer never uses customer data for advertising or to train AI models.
- **You control access.** Once your administrator changes the administrator password, your data is private to your organization. Federated Computer staff need your permission to look at it, for example when you ask support for help.

## Coming soon

- **Agent Sandbox** (limited beta, launching fall 2026). It runs AI agents that wake when something happens, such as a new ticket or an uploaded file, do their job, and go back to sleep. Each agent runs in its own isolated space, so one misbehaving agent can't reach other agents' data or your core systems.
- **AI in Superbrain.** Connecting Superbrain's links and notes to Federated Core's AI tools.
- **Learning from your own data.** Training AI models on your data without the data leaving your server.

To join the Agent Sandbox beta or discuss AI for your organization, contact Federated Computer. See [Getting help](../getting-help/).
